Reiterates what was in that lost letter, namely, he married shortly before resigning from the presidency of Harvard and then planned to travel in the U.S. before embarking on a tour of Europe. In the October letter John not only had asked for advice on travel in Europe but he also relayed the news that his sister, Mrs. Amory [Sarah Kirkland], had died very suddenly. He now asks E. R. to write him in Paris where he plans to stay for a month.
