Q 1832, Dec. 10 Folded inside the letter cited above (24 Nov. 1832) was E. R.'s draft of his reply to Augustus Foot. E. R. was pleased with the terms of the sale, his only regret being that the sale did not take place 7 years earlier. He mentions he would like to visit Twinsburg in the spring of 1833. He notes that 2 or 3 months earlier he sent Harvey Baldwin the deeds to the properties. He asks to be informed if the deeds have been recorded and requests information about the character of the new owner, Ian Humphrey.

Q 1826, Jan. 7 Letter of considerable length to E. R. in Andover from Asaph Whittlesey in Tallmadge, Ohio. Acknowledges receiving a letter from E. R. in which E. R. explains that the death of his father has caused the transfer of the Ohio lots to the heirs and subsequently to him and his brother George. [see Deed No. 1, Oct. 17, 1825] Whittlesey attempts to answer a series of questions posed by E. R. The land is assessed at $400 and is about 5 - 8 miles from the Canal. Little immigration to the area at present, so little demand for land.

Q 1836, June 24 Letter to Charles Robinson in New Haven from Augustus E. Foot, who was writing from Cleveland, Ohio. The letter was delivered by Arthur Foot who was traveling to Connecticut. E. R. was going to be in New York and therefore had asked Foot to direct "any funds . . . and information" to his brother Charles. Foot had gone to Cleveland to meet Humphrey, but Humphrey never arrived and thus the proceeds of the final note owed for the property could not be sent as promised.

Q 1833, Jan. 24? Slip of paper in E. R.'s hand [3" x 5"] with notations concerning the expenses paid in connection with the land in Ohio. Indicates that George Robinson paid taxes on the property to Tuttle in 1830 and to Baldwin in 1831, totaling $27.75. E. R. paid taxes and related expenses in 1832-1833 totaling $18.58 and received $400 cash on Jan. 24, 1833.

Q 1835, Jan. 2 Letter to E. R. in Boston from Augustus E. Foot in Hudson, Ohio. Foot replies negatively to a suggestion set forth by E. R., namely that Humphrey "pay up at once" (i.e., secure a mortgage) for the purchase of the Twinsburg, Ohio land. The reason given by E. R. is that he is planning to "go abroad, to be absent for several years."

Q 1832, Aug. 8 Letter from Harvey Baldwin of the Hudson Portage Co. in Hudson, Ohio to Edward Robinson in Andover MA. Apparently E. R. had written to Baldwin asking many questions about the value and resale possibilities of the Ohio lots and this letter attempts some very detailed answers. For example, Mills explains the soil is good for grazing or grain, timber is very fine (whitewood, black walnut, cherry, butternut, chestnut, oak, hickory, etc.), taxes are $14 per annum, and land in the region is selling from $2.50 to $6 per acre. Mills, however, is not very optimistic about selling the lots at a profit in the present real estate market. [contains a second letter; see below]

Q 1833, Jan. 12 Letter to E. R. in Andover from Augustus E. Foot in Hudson, Ohio. Enclosed is a draft drawn on New York for $100 for E. R., because his brother George never applied for the money. Notes that Gen. [Harvey] Baldwin, a resident of Hudson and treasurer of the Western Reserve College, will in the future be able to write checks drawn on a bank in Boston because the college has funds in that city. Foot describes the character of Humphrey, per E. R.'s request, but part of his description is ripped off the page and lies under the wax seal. One can read, however, that Humphrey "is one of the first lawyers on the Reserve and was a candidate for a seat in Congress at the last election and came near being successful."

Q 1836, May 17 Letter to E. R. in Boston from Augustus E. Foot in Hudson, Ohio. Relates that Humphrey was unable to come up with the final payment because the person who was supposed to settle a separate payment with Humphrey died suddenly. Humphrey then turned to the bank for funds but was unable to find any money for two reasons: "merchants are in the East buying goods and have drained the cash reserve of banks; the rage for speculation in the Western public lands finds every available dollar going to land offices where it is locked up." Foot explains that he hopes to secure funds via his brothers who live out of the Hudson area.

Q 1832, Nov. 24 Letter to E. R. in Andover from Augustus E. Foot in Hudson, Ohio. Foot, a Land Agent hired by George Robinson, negotiated the sale of the Ohio property to Ian R. Humphrey of Hudson. Terms of the sale are outlined in this letter. The amount that the Robinsons are to receive is $1588, which Foot says he will issue in Eastern Bills or a draft drawn on a N.Y. Bank.

Q 1824, Sept. 29 Letter to William Robinson in Southington CT from Gideon Mills in Hudson, Ohio. Answers some of the questions Robinson posed in a letter of 8 Sept. 1824. Says that some improvements to lot 3 have been made, but the two young men have never made any payments. Mentions that the soil is good and the population expanding that in part of Ohio. Considers $4. an acre an acceptable price.
