Manuscript brief written by Alexander Hamilton, counsel to the defense for the Rutgers v. Waddington case. Under the terms of the Trespass Act, Elizabeth Rutgers sued Joshua Waddington for damages caused by his use of her brewery during the British occupation in the Revolutionary War. Hamilton's brief shredded the Trespass Act as an illegal piece of legislation that flouted established principles of common and international law. Title from case. Rare Books copy: disbound; in case, 48 x 39 x 4 cm.
